Find an Article

It can be a difficult task finding journal and newspaper articles for your paper. You may think typing a few words into Google is the best idea, but give the library resources a try.

Articles are indexed and searchable in what librarians like to call databases. Many articles are available in full text and accessible from off campus just by signing in using your network login and password.

The following links can help you begin your research journey.

If you're not sure where to begin, try Academic Search Premier, JSTOR or WilsonWeb Omnifile Full Text. Any of these resources have articles on a wide range of topics. Or see what sources are recommended for your specific course in the library course pages.

If you have searched a general database already and need more information, or you know into what subject area your topic fits use the database list organized by subject.

You should not have to pay for any articles you find. If an article is not full text within a database look for the Find It Button. Clicking this button will search to see if the article is full text in another resource or you can request it via Interlibrary Loan. You will need the ID# from the front of your WisCard to make a request. It takes about a week perhaps less if it's a widely owned publication.

Metalib - allows you to search multiple databases including the catalog all at once.

Newspaper Databases & News Sites - If your topic is very current or local in nature newspapers may be a good place to start searching.

If you have a citation for an article and want to find the full text of the article use Citation Linker. Research Tip: use the bibliography or works cited from one good article to find other related articles.

Full-Text Online Journals (by title) - If you want to search within a specific journal check out the list to see if it is available full text. Can also search by category.

Databases listed Alphabetically - This will give you the whole list of UW Colleges databases and electronic resources listed alphabetically. It also includes some Quick Links.
